As 2024 develops the British Labour leadership appear to understand well enough that, barring a big surprise, they are set to face a horrible prospect on public finances, services, and the economy. But the international scene bodes even worse if Ukraine collapses and a restored Trump drops NATO. Just for a start: where's the extra funding for defence coming from amid the domestic struggles?

In such circumstances what could Britain under Labour do - besides shrinking with coastal erosion? 'Western civilisation' never did exist in any coherent sense, whilst the crazy mix of uses for 'liberal', combined with American isolationism (predicted even without Trump) and European implosion will make that doubly so now.

The one consolation for Starmer, Reeves, Lammy, and the rest is likely to be being freer to set their own path. Who knows: can we imagine the ludicrous prospect of Labour as heroic figures opening a new future for world history (supported by trusty AIs)?

That very suggestion looks good only for a laugh - I am laughing now - but sometimes weird things do happen.
