Christopher Nolan's film of The Odyssey - which I confess I haven't seen, but the reactions I have read are suitably mixed - does seem to have awakened fresh interest in Greek myths, which is fine in itself. More troubling would be any additional people trying to imitate warrior heroes (apt to feature in myths), not least because of the kind of war the current one is having to wage.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy's back story might have been similar to Odysseus' is he had had the misfortune to inherit a minor Greek kingdom c. 1250BC, given that Homer suggests the latter also had some talent for humour and acting (if he ever existed). Taking up politics in a country with uncertain identity and corruption problems was bound to be a tough assignment, for all Zelenskyy's success in comedy media. By early 2022 his poll ratings were already slipping. Had not Putin - along with many others, including in the West - assumed Ukraine would be a quick pushover, Zelenskyy might have been just another quickly forgotten politico. Instead, the war that began on February 24, 2022 has catapulted the former actor, impresario, and comedian into the role of warrior hero. (As a post-modern example, he can continue both short of stature and mostly 'carefully casual' in dress.)
That role does not necessarily mean Zelenskyy wins his war (remember Hannibal or Napoleon Bonaparte). Even less does it mean he won't mess up at times in dealing with subordinates - although he does appear to have ability for ruthless correction of his mistakes. What it does mean is he demonstrates the knack to keep people battling on against adds, share (or adopt) a people's identity, and readiness to face personal danger (so he declined the American bolthole offer). Such is the stuff of which heroic myths are made.
Make no mistake, I support Zelenskyy's efforts and hope he manages to win. But heroism in the world of machine warfare - with nuclear weaponry lurking in the background - raises the stakes even higher than in Homer's world of potential enslavement and pillage. Zelenskyy was given no choice about the latest move in his CV, but if others try to follow (Trump seems unable to decide between warrior and peacemaker) the machines might be the only survivors.
